How long have you have been training in Taekwondo?
I have been training for 16 years.
How did you get involved in Taekwondo?
When I first moved to Ottawa in 1992, I started training in Taekwondo with my husband, Mr. Lionel Gibson, at the Tae E. Lee Bank Street Dojang. I soon realized that along with conditioning the body, mind & spirit, I had found an art that allowed me to pursue my artistic and athletic abilities.
What is Taekwondo to you specifically?
I am passionate and dedicated to Taekwondo because it has inspired me through my mental attitude and training to keep developing myself to the maximum of my potential and in all ways of my life. On a personal note, it has taught me the courage, strength and confidence needed to keep going even in bad times, to not despair and the true value of hard work.
What do you enjoy about Taekwondo?
I enjoy both the traditional and competitive aspects of Taekwondo along with teaching students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Poomsae is my passion and some may call me a bit obsessive when I focus train and forge repeated practise, but my desire and motivation have lead me to enter numerous competitions such as my first international tournament back in 1998 — “First Canada Open”, Edmonton, Alberta, Silver Medal.
I remember when I got my first gold medal in competition, back as a green belt, and that exuberating feeling has kept me competing ever since. I have been to Nationals as a competitor and won many gold medals and first place trophies at various tournaments.
How has Taekwondo affected you?
Taekwondo has brought me on a journey of enlightening experiences and is a way of life for me. The art of Taekwondo has rules and tenents to follow and I incorporate these teachings to live well, seek out self improvement and above all else to respect people. JUNG DO – going the right way.
